The days between Thanksgiving and Giving Tuesday are recognized across the nonprofit sector as the “giving season” kickoff, when many people reflect on gratitude, community, and year-end impact.
The days between Thanksgiving and Giving Tuesday mark the official kickoff of the annual giving season, when people naturally reflect on gratitude, community, and meaningful impact. This period represents a powerful opportunity to support local organizations that create immediate, visible change in our own neighborhoods.
In 2025, with Giving Tuesday falling on December 2nd, just five days after Thanksgiving, we have a natural arc from reflection to action that can transform our communities. Donors are especially inclined to give during this period because they are thinking about both their values and their year‑end finances.
For members, it’s an ideal time to align personal priorities with meaningful, tax‑deductible contributions. For organizations entering this window, a clear message and simple giving options see higher engagement and stronger fundraising results.

Why the Annual Giving Season Matters Locally
When you direct your giving toward local organizations, you create ripple effects that are visible in your daily life. Local nonprofits understand the unique needs of the community because they live and work alongside us. Their staff and volunteers are our neighbors, and their impact is something we can see firsthand.
During the giving season, nonprofit organizations are particularly focused on meeting critical year-end needs that affect people we interact with every day. Consider these powerful statistics about the annual giving season:
- Last Giving Tuesday, $3.6 billion was donated in the U.S. alone
- 33% of all annual giving happens in December
- 10% of annual giving occurs in the last 3 days of the year
- 50% of nonprofits receive the majority of donations from October through December
Imagine the transformation possible if even a quarter of those donations were directed to organizations serving our immediate communities. The impact would be both profound and visible in our daily lives:
Immediate Community Benefits
- Direct assistance to neighbors in need through Cambridge Women’s Center’s emergency support programs
- Local economic growth through Cambridge Local First initiatives that strengthen small businesses
- Winter supply distribution for vulnerable community members before the coldest months arrive
- Educational opportunities for Rockland youth through after-school programs
Long-Term Community Investment
- Sustainable infrastructure development for community spaces
- Job training programs that elevate local employment opportunities
- Arts and culture preservation that maintains Orangetown’s unique character
- Environmental initiatives that improve local green spaces
The MTM Institute encourages you to support established 501(c)(3) organizations providing local services this giving season. While national organizations do important work, your donation to a local nonprofit creates a more concentrated impact in our immediate communities.
